GENIVI Alliance Announces Compliance with Linux Foundation's MeeGo IVI Project

The GENIVI Alliance, an automotive and consumer electronics industry association for promoting the open In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) reference platform, announced that the Linux Foundation’s (News - Alert) MeeGo IVI Project has been approved as GENIVI compliant.

The other GENIVI compliant members include Canonical, Mentor Graphics, MontaVista, and Wind River (News - Alert).

The development enables the Linux Foundation’s software solution to qualify for OEM request for proposals requiring GENIVI compliant products. GENIVI’s Compliance Program provides the foundation for delivering the benefits of using the GENIVI platform.

“GENIVI members have a productive history leveraging the MeeGo platform in various ways,” said Steve Crumb, executive director of the GENIVI Alliance, in a statement. ”GENIVI members can now have the confidence that this platform, along with the other four GENIVI compliant platforms, has met the criteria of the GENIVI compliance program.”

Main benefits of GENIVI’s Compliance Program include faster time-to-market; reduction in development costs; availability of code transparency; options for integrating and customizing solutions and increase in IVI interchangeability across vehicle makes and models.

The program encourages member companies to offer different versions of components enabling diversity. The program also allows replacement of a particular component or group of components with another open-source or proprietary implementation that satisfies the compliance criteria. Moreover it allows multiple distributions to be compliant.

As part of driving the broad adoption of an In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) open source development platform, GENIVI Alliance delivers reference implementations, offers certification programs and fosters a vibrant open source IVI community. GENIVI’s work is expected to result in shortened development cycles, quicker time-to-market, and reduced costs for companies developing IVI equipment and software.  

Recently, MontaVista (News - Alert) Software, a provider of solutions for embedded Linux commercialization, announced that the MontaVista Automotive Technology Platform is complaint with the GENIVI Compliance Specification Release 1.0.

The MontaVista Automotive Technology Platform is GENIVI 1.0 Compliant on the following platforms: Freescale SABRE i.MX53, ARM (News - Alert) Cortex-A8 and Renesas R-Car M1, ARM Cortex-A9.
