So Much Technology, Not Enough IT Professionals

The business world relies on technology more than ever before; in fact there is a shortage of skilled IT workers that is hurting several businesses just as they even get started. A new report indicates that there is now an unprecedented shortage of IT professionals in the business world as a whole. The same report shows that 90 percent of C-level executives think that recruiting and training top technology talent is an especially large challenge these days. The report, put out by Appirio took the responses of more than 200 C-level execs and 200 IT staff members in the U.S. and U.K.

"The intense competition for tech talent has placed a major strain on the enterprise, and it's costing companies millions," said Chris Barbin, CEO of Appirio according to KCENTV. "Those in the tech and services industries spend too much time talking about the systems they are implementing, and not enough on the talent needed to architect, develop, or manage those systems,” he added.

This comes along the same time as a report that indicates that workers in all different kinds of businesses are quite a bit happier when they have an in-house IT department they can lean on. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering the close quarters enterprise level workers are used to dealing with, emotionally if not physically. In a dog-eat-dog business world, employees feel more confident when they know the people working alongside them have their back.

That is why it’s a bit of a problem when situations occur like a company having to abandon a project altogether because they don’t have enough IT help. The report by Appirio indicates this happens about 25 percent of the time these days. The report also details some ways in which a company can make sure they are getting the best IT staff. Giving these staff members top-of-the-line resources, as well as up-to-date technology and good flexibility will keep IT personnel where they are currently working.
