Change Your Weak Passwords Now On Your Own Through Utilization of Password Reset Software

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Poor Sony absorbed another security breach, but it really wasn’t helped by its customers’ reliance on easily hackable passwords including ABC123, password and Seinfeld. Please, people! Here’s where password reset software would have come in most handy.

FlowingData.com recently wrote that yes, Sony was victimized by yet another security breach last week where over a million passwords, “stored in plain text, were released into the wild.”

To underline the point of just how predictable many passwords have become, FlowingData noted that software architect Troy Hunt looked at the dataset and found how disturbingly predictable people's passwords are.

Now we understand the value of having an omnipassword, one password you can remember, which you can use across multiple sites. We do that too, but at least we make it ten digits or over and use both numbers and letters in non-predictable patterns.

There really is no excuse for having a password 10 characters or less without a combination of numbers and letters. Hunt’s analysis found the 25 most used passwords were seinfeld, password, winner, 123456, purple, sweeps, contest, princess, maggie, 9452, peanut, shadow, ginger, michael, buster, sunshine, tigger, cookie, george, summer, taylor, bosco, abc123, ashley, bailey.

Okay, if your name’s George Michael, Summer Bailey or Ashley Seinfeld, and if you were born on December 34, 1956, you might have to do a bit more work to come up with a memorable password, but it can be done. How about the name of your childhood stuffed animal, or your zip code? What about your very first phone number or the name of your high school spelled backwards?

Instead of these choices, you could rely on password reset software. Thycotic offers software that enables users to self-service password resets. Not only does the password reset software provided by the company have many great features associated with it, it is considered the top help desk software for allowing users to securely reset their passwords. No other help desk software offers these advanced features at the same competitive price, and with full U.S.-based support.
