Password Reset Software Tools Make it Easier for Users to Employ Images when Resetting Passwords

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

The expression “a picture is worth a thousand words” fits in well with the process of resetting passwords using a password reset software tool. Now, users can employ graphical images for authentication with a Password Reset Server.

This way, businesses no longer have to waste time and resources doing password resets for employees, explains the Thycotic website, a secure software products provider.

Self-service password reset software also helps to dramatically lower the amount of calls that help desks receive, as employees can now reset their own passwords – even if they forgot the original – through secure questions, image recognition and telephone verification using the tool and related password reset software.

When it comes to ensuring security, users find it easier to recognize images than written words for their passwords, the company said.

As part of the package, users will get a tutorial on using image recognition. A business can select the number of images that require recognition, and decide if the order of selecting the images is part of the security plan.

An added advantage to this software is that users can reset forgotten passwords directly from their workstation. The Password Reset Server also integrates with the logon screen.

The Password Reset Server is easy to use and features security protection. Here’s how it works: A user selects the "Forgot Password" icon and then he/she sees a Password Reset Server dialog. The user then gives an Active Directory username.

The Windows Logon screen supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows 7.

Reset procedures can vary based on the requirements of the department.

The Password Reset Server also gives administrators tracking tools to monitor which users enrolled and which users need reminders about enrollment, while users receive 30 days of access to self-service software.

The product also meets Section 508 government compliance standards for the disabled. “Federal employees with disabilities have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to the access and use by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency,” says the federal policy.

In a related story, TMCnet’s Jamie Epstein reported recently that more and more IT professionals now understand how businesses can benefit from password reset software, with one way being through improved efficiency. Password reset requests can take up to 30 percent of a company’s help desk calls, but effective password management utilizing Thycotic’s Password Reset Software can help to cut costs as well as increase the level of productivity for users and help desks.
