New Fellow Appointed by Linux Foundation

Richard Purdie joined the Linux Foundation as Linux Foundation Fellow. An announcement in this regard has been made by the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, the Linux Foundation. John Hawley, Till Kamppeter, Janina Sajka and Linus Torvalds are the current Linux Foundation Fellows.

Richard Purdie is the maintainer of Yocto Project. He is also the core developer of OpenEmbedded. OpenEmbedded is an open source project and build framework for embedded Linux. Coding assistance, guides and FAQs are provided by this project. The Yocto Project is based on OpenEmbedded. The Poky Build System has also been founded by Richard.

New demands are being placed on Linux software development due to the rise of Linux in mobile and embedded computing. The development has also eased with the opening of new opportunities for tools and infrastructure. Resources that can accelerate development efforts and spur the adoption of Linux and open source software will be provided financial support by the Linux Foundation's Fellowship Fund. Full-time work on the Yocto Project, OpenEmbedded, the Poky Project and other embedded Linux development initiatives will be carried out by Richard Purdie as a Linux Foundation Fellow.

Developers can create custom Linux software for any hardware architecture with the help of high-quality open source infrastructure and tools. These tools and infrastructure are provided by the Yocto Project which was announced in October. A helpful starting point for developers will be provided by this project. The project also establishes shared build infrastructure and tools. Vendors will be therefore able to speed time to market.

In a press release, Jim Zemlin (News - Alert), executive director of Linux Foundation, said, "We are happy to be able to add someone of Richard's caliber. He has already made extremely important contributions to the advancement of embedded Linux and his depth of expertise in this area will accelerate technical progress in the year ahead."

According to Linux Foundation Fellow Richard Purdie, a neutral forum in which the highest priority work on Linux can be done is provided by the Linux Foundation. Richard said he is looking forward to dedicate his time as Linux Foundation Fellow. The development of embedded Linux will be eased as tools and infrastructure will be provided to the developers.
