AMD Debuts ATI Radeon HD 5970

Calling it “the fastest graphics card in the world,” AMD has announced the release of the ATI Radeon HD 5970. The dual-chip high-end card features two clock-speed-reduced Radeon HD 5870 GPUs on a single graphics card.

According to AMD (News - Alert), this next-generation powerhouse brings together cutting-edge graphic, display and memory technology to offer an unprecedented graphics performance and unrivaled HD gaming experience. The card also features support for Microsoft (News - Alert) DirectX 11 technology and ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology. Eyefinity technology can drive up to three displays at once for a 7680x1600 maximum resolution.

Equipped with overdrive technology, the card brings a pair of Cypress GPUs linked on a single board by a PCI (News - Alert) Express bridge for nearly five TeraFLOPS of computer power, or 10 TeraFLOPS when setup in CrossFireX. ATI CrossFireX technology leverages the power of multiple graphics processors to deliver even more HQ gaming performance when using ATI Eyefinity technology.

AMD said that gamers can now have high-quality HD gaming experience while playing DirectX 11 games, thanks to the world’s most powerful graphics core built on 40nm process technology harnessing up to 3,200 stream processors. The ATI Stream technology allows the 5970 to improve the performance of enabled media, entertainment and productivity applications.

Matt Skynner, vice president and general manager of AMD Graphics Group, said that with the arrival of the ATI Radeon HD 5970, the fastest graphics card in the world, it has cemented AMD as the unquestioned graphics leader. With the holiday shopping season right around the corner, the new card, coupled with the awesome power of ATI Eyefinity technology, is the ultimate setup for serious gamers.

AMD has added that the ATI Radeon HD 5970 will be launched in the new Alienware Area-51, Area-51 ALX and Aurora desktop PCs and has claimed that the card is a perfect match for these desktops. The high level of gaming capability offered by the card and the visual and performance enhancements made possible by DirectX 11 hardware will only benefit gamers with enhanced image quality enabling an incredibly intense gaming experience.

Recently AMD accelerated Flash Player 10.1 with ATI stream technology and unveiled ATI FirePro V7750 graphics accelerator.
