Active Broadband Networks DBSM Integrated with Pentaho Big Data Analytics

Active Broadband Networks has integrated its Dynamic Broadband Service Manager (DBSM) with Pentaho Big Data Analytics.

This integration will empower network operators with a powerful suite of tools that will help analyze huge volumes of stream data collected by the DBSM from network elements in broadband access networks.

Active Broadband specializes in the supply of operational support systems (OSS) for broadband providers.

“We needed a business intelligence solution that integrated with our Big Data storage system so our customers could easily analyze and generate reports against the massive volumes of data we collect,” said Chris Gunner, chief technology officer at Active Broadband Networks.

Streaming protocols like IPDR, RADIUS accounting and IPFIX/NetFLow are leveraged by the DBSM to collect network, service and subscriber usage data. This data is then processed and stored in a Cassandra NoSQL Big Data database.

Network operations personnel will draw reports from this information to monitor network performance on a daily basis. Also, network engineers and product managers are able to analyze the data for capacity and service planning.

Pentaho helps in simplifying big data management, reporting and analytics by delivering integrated support for Cassandra. It also provides a suite of intuitive, easy-to-use business analytics and data integration tools.

“We chose Pentaho, a leading-edge provider of open-source solutions for Big Data business analytics, because of its ease of use, intuitive and powerful report designer, and Pentaho’s ability to integrate, manipulate and enrich data during the analytics process,” Gunner added.

Network operators can use the Pentaho tools to create custom reports and modify the suite of standard reports provided by Active Broadband Networks.

The bundling of the Pentaho Business Analytics platform with the Active Broadband data integration, business analytics and big data capabilities offers customers a cost-effective solution that can intuitively track and analyze terabytes of network and subscriber usage data.

Richard Daley, chief strategy officer, Pentaho Corporation remarked, “As a result of Active Broadband’s unique Big Data offering, its broadband provider customers have the information they need to deploy usage-based services and make data-driven decisions.”

Active Broadband Networks also recently extended the capabilities of its Dynamic Broadband Service Manager (DBSM) to DSL networks by adding support for RADIUS-based data collection and policy control.
