Gmail Mishap Turns E-mail Users Into Spammers

Chances are, we’ve all been there. We send an e-mail and it acts like it didn’t go through or we receive an error message and we resend, only to find that we have sent the e-mail to the recipient multiple times. It’s helpful when the person on the other end notifies you of the problem, but what if it is happening with all e-mails to all recipients?

It appears this was the case for Gmail users recently, according to a PC World report. Apparently, users have been reporting in large volume that the webmail service offered by Google (News - Alert) is resending messages to recipients. The most annoying aspect is that when this happens, users are turned into spammers who unintentionally annoy everyone – including business contacts.

The PC World report shows that users have been filing multiple pages on the official Gmail Help Form with complaints about the issue since Tuesday. One Google employee appears to be responding, saying the company is investigating the issue. He posted the following message at around 1 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time on Wednesday:

"Thanks for your reports. Just wanted to let you know that the engineers have been working on this. I should have more details tomorrow about what's going on, what you can expect, and progress toward fixing this for you ASAP.”

Reportedly, this problem is happening across a variety of operating systems, browsers and e-mail client software. While the problems seemed to have started days ago, complaints didn’t start to surface until Tuesday.

According to reports, the problem happens with some messages, affecting some recipients, but not all. And, for those who are affected, the result is an embarrassing situation they cannot control or fix.

Is Google truly on top of the problem? After all, this is the free service and with the company’s dominance in the market, there isn’t as much incentive to issue a repair in a timely manner. Then again, why would such a problem plague the powerhouse Google in the first place?

In other Google news, the company announcedthose iPhone users who want to know exactly when they get a new e-mail on their Google account, push e-mail has now been enabled on the iPhone.
