Recently TMC’s CEO, Rich Tehrani (News - Alert), sat down and interviewed Kianoosh Naghshineh, the president and CEO of Chelsio Communications, which specializes in unified wire, storage software and appliance technology, working in the convergence of networking, storage and clustering interconnects.

“The customers find that by using the same fabric, using their legacy switch infrastructure, that they have to buy fewer switches, fewer gateways, fewer IT personnel and software licenses,” he said.

When asked by Tehrani if there was one segment of the market that was growing faster than the others, he mentioned that “with this fabric convergence, it’s an all-or-nothing type of thing. That’s the one bet we made early on.” Naghshineh explained that they get some revenue from storage, “a little bit from virtualization, a little bit from high-performance computing and clustering, and a little bit from other areas where people just want to go to get a specialized feature.”

Among early adopters “storage guys led the way,” he said, adding that “but now, the rest of the data center is catching up.”

When asked if there was an increase in compute power or storage capacity requirements due to video, Naghshineh agreed that yes, video is a driver, and that in terms of the high-performance computing, “we’re also seeing lower latency. Once pipes get fatter, latency does become an issue.”
