Intel, Nokia Team up to give Mobile Technology a 3D Boost

Sure, we hear a lot about 3G in the mobile world. But what about 3D technologies that would make our phones come alive “Avatar”-style?

Thanks to chipmaker Intel (News - Alert) and mobile phones maker Nokia, things are about to get real.

Information Week reports that the two companies have launched a joint laboratory that will focus in part on developing 3D user interfaces for mobile devices.

The center will be part of Intel's European research network, called Intel Labs Europe, and will be located at the University of Oulu in Finland, near Nokia’s (News - Alert) headquarters, according to reports. Lab workers will reportedly focus on making 3D games and movies for mobile interfaces.

"3D technology could change the way we use our mobile devices and make our experiences with them much more immersive," said Rich Green, senior VP and chief technical officer for Nokia, in a press statement.

For example, one possible application would be the display 3D hologram of the person being talked to on a smartphone -- cool, right?!

The research is expected to incorporate the MeeGo open source software platform developed jointly by Intel and Nokia.
