Samsung Joins Hands with Anobit for Design of New SD Card Controller Featuring MSP Technology

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and FLASH memory developer, Anobit, together have joined hands for the design of a new controller, SK6630, which will be used in Secure Digital “SD” memory cards.

The new SK6630 SD card controller incorporates Anobit’s advanced Memory Signal Processing “MSP” technology to provide high endurance and performance for Samsung’s (News - Alert) 3-bit NAND. In other words, the new controller will provide high endurance and high performance for Samsung’s 3-bit NAND at advanced process nodes by leveraging MSP technology.

The major benefit of a 3-bit MLC (multi-level cell) is storage density, since the technology provides 50 percent more storage per chip than 2-bit MLC. Samsung’s 3-bit cells appear in memory cards, flash drives, and CE devices. These also enable downstream manufacturers to economically boost device capacities above the 32GB mark.

Anobit's Memory Signal Processing “MSP” technology is based on proprietary algorithms that compensate for the physical limitations of NAND flash. The technology considerably improves the reliability and performance of NAND-based storage products and systems.

The MSP technology enables MLC-based solutions at SLC-grade reliability and performance, and 3 bit-per-cell solutions at MLC-grade reliability and performance. Consequently, a significant reduction in cost-per-bit can be observed, says Anobit.

According to a press release, the SK6630 SD card controller is co-designed and manufactured by Taiwan-based storage and multimedia solution provider SkyMedi for use with Samsung’s 30 nanometer class 3-bit NAND.

Seijin Kim, vice president, Flash Memory Planning/Enabling, Samsung Electronics, said, “Our collaboration with Anobit enhances Samsung’s industry-leading high-density NAND product portfolio in the advanced process nodes.”
