Webinar Highlights Data Center Ethernet Opportunities

The data center Ethernet market has grown today as virtualization, convergence and cloud services continue to rise in demand.

Along with this demand comes not only a tremendous opportunity for equipment manufacturers, but also a need to understand the technical complexities and meet a myriad of standards.

During a recent TMC Webinar, “Datacenter Ethernet - 'Top of Rack' or 'Racking Your Brains,” sponsored by Aricent (News - Alert) and Marvell, attendees learned about the market for Data Center Ethernet application, networking and storage - as well as the usage of the Infiniband and Fiber channel through Ethernet.

Guest presenters Rajesh Kumar Sundararajan, assistant vice president at Aricent and Shalabh Kothari, senior manager at Marvell (News - Alert) Semiconductor also discussed “top-of-rack” switches, a key component to start the migration of Data Centers towards a unified Ethernet-based core and shared their knowledge on hardware and software requirements as well as mandatory and optional requirements on these switches.

“So what does this all mean? New technology, new devices, and new software – what is really happening?” Shalabh said during his presentation.

“A huge opportunity.”

According to Shalabh, there is a huge market disruption at this time with multiple parties working on new standards and lots players to providing capable devices and capable systems as well as support structures that data centers have – there tends to be a lot more risk taking than a small or medium business would have traditionally taken, Shalabh commented.

“Now thanks to the disruptive nature of technologies, there is room for the entry of new players and incumbents,” Shalbah said.
