PMC-Sierra Intros Pluggable Solution for Seamless Connectivity to Home, Business Equipment

PMC-Sierra (News - Alert), Inc., a provider of Internet infrastructure semiconductor solutions, has announced the launch of pluggable GPON Optical Network Terminal reference design that can connect any Customer Premises Equipment equipped with a standard small form-factor pluggable port to a high-speed Passive Optical Network.

Deploying this low-power, plug-and-play ONT named as PAS65823A-KIT pluggable ONT, carriers and system vendors will be able to upgrade existing service-oriented home and small/medium business equipment, such as gateways, routers, and integrated access devices, to full GPON functionality without redesigning their hardware or software infrastructure. Further, they won't have to deploy new CPE when introducing advanced fiber-based services.

Based upon the GPON SoC for mini-ONT applications developed by PMC-Sierra, the new pluggable ONT doesn't need a separate power supply, and is powered by standard interfaces in the host device itself.

The company offers support to 'IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile', 10G EPON or 'IEEE 802.3av' and GPON 'ITU-T G.984' standards to provide gigabit PON products that are based on the robust GigaPASS FTTH Architecture. The architecture deploys a powerful 32-bit programmable processing engine for executing the real-time operating system, middleware, and application-specific firmware required for high performance FTTH network access. The company also provides SoC solutions that provide end-to-end gigabit-per-second bandwidth connections linking central office equipment and customer premises equipment to the PON network.

The PAS65823A-KIT pluggable ONT enables seamless integration between an optical transceiver, an innovative host interface, and a complete OMCI stack that is interoperable with a range of OLT systems. Enterprises can connect the ONT to any SFP receptacle and does not require any software or hardware modifications to the host system. Reference design of the ONT has been built around the PAS7400 GPON ONT SoC, and has a typical power consumption of 2.5 Watts.

According to Raphael Sankar, Vice President & Co-General Manager, FTTH Division at PMC-Sierra, FTTH networks have passed the initial adoption stage and service providers are looking for innovative ways to connect existing customers and equipment to Passive Optical Networks for advanced services at faster speeds. Sankar continued that multiple regulators require demarcation between CPE and carrier-provided PON ONTs, and PMC-Sierra's pluggable ONT reference design enables OEMs and ODMs to easily and cost-effectively add PON connectivity to existing customer premises equipment using standard interfaces without any hardware or software redesign.

PMC-Sierra has made the new PAS65823A-KIT pluggable GPON ONT reference design available to the customers, and more information regarding the component can be obtained at www.pmc-sierra.com/ftth-pon or www.pmc-sierra.com/contactSales.

Recently this month, PMC-Sierra, Inc. entered into a definitive agreement with Adaptec (News - Alert), Inc., provider of innovative data storage hardware and software solutions, to acquire its channel storage business.
