First EoC on a Chip Unveiled By Sigma Designs

Milpitas, Calif. based provider system-on-chip (SoC) solutions Sigma Designs has announced the release of CopperGate CG3310M, the first complete Ethernet over Coax (EoC) solution on a single chip.

The integrated mixed signal design of the CG3310M reduces the footprint on the PCB and cuts down on the number of external components required for delivering cost-effective broadband access over existing coax infrastructure. It is also much more cost-effective to integrate the chip into end user devices such as set top boxes and networked consumer appliances. This allows OEMs to deliver much cheaper integrated solutions for multiple service offerings over EoC.

The new flexible band selection process used by CG3310M ensures better performance, increased robustness and better coexistence with legacy services such as CATV and DOCSIS. The new chip is also powered by Sigma's Fast EoC technology which ensures the delivery of solid 160 Mbit/s of total system throughput to 126 simultaneous users. The new chip is also very energy efficient, requiring only 1.25 watts of power.

The CopperGate CG3310M is based on the HomePNA (News - Alert)/ITU G.9954 standard and is tailored for the highly price-sensitive markets of China, India and Brazil.

'The CG3310M changes the game in EoC solutions. It delivers breakthrough price performance for EoC. Plus, as a leading media processor company, Sigma can enable set top box and networked media device OEMs to deliver a new level of affordability and performance for operators,' said GABI HILEVITZ, vice president and general manager, Home Connectivity Business Unit, Sigma Designs (News - Alert).

'The new CG3310M will save Tata millions as we can more rapidly and more affordably roll out HomePNA-enabled bundled satellite and broadband services all across India. It is no wonder HomePNA is the standard for EoC solutions,' said Jose Joseph, vice president business development, Tata Sky, a leading Indian DTH Satellite TV provider.
