Calix Unveils Five New Line Cards to C7 Multiservice Access Platform

Calix (News - Alert) – a provider in North America of broadband communications access systems and software for copper- and fiber- based network architectures that enable communications service providers to connect to their residential and business subscribers – recently introduced five new line cards that enhance the capacity and Ethernet capabilities of the C7 multiservice access platform.

 

These new line cards bring 10 gigabit per second Ethernet transport and aggregation functionality, high-speed digital subscriber line 2 and enhanced gigabit passive optical networking services, as well as Ethernet gateway functionality to MSAP, which now features 47 individual line card options to meet the service requirements of today’s CSPs.

 

Deployed at more than 500 North American and international CSPs whose networks serve more than 32 millionsubscriberlines, the C7 enables these CSPs to evolve to advanced Ethernet and fiber-based services from existing copper-based legacy service offerings like plain old telephone services and special business circuits. Leveraging the Calix Ethernet eXtensible Architecture, an Ethernet kernel based on industry standard protocols and focused on the requirements of the access network, the new EXA Powered C7 line cards delivers more capacity, higher bandwidth services across both copper and fiber, and more flexibility in bridging legacy services and advanced Ethernet services in a single, manageable platform.

 

The new EXA Powered C7 line cards share a common software core with other Calix E-Series platforms, including the new E7 Ethernet service access platform. This commonality not only provides engineering efficiencies across the Calix unified access portfolio, but allows the C7 MSAP and E7 ESAP platforms to work harmoniously in the access network despite their differences in form factor and functionality, easing the complexities of service delivery and network expansion and delivering the extensibility necessary for an all-video world. In addition, each new card is compatible with the existing stable of C7 cards, allowing for simple service migration and preservation of necessary legacy services.

 

The RAP-10GE forms the core of the EXA Powered C7, operating as the common control unit for the C7 and delivering carrier-grade, ERPS ring protected 10 Gbps and 1 Gbps transport interfaces, full metro Ethernet forum service assurance and compliance, as well as a 150 Gbps switching fabric.

 

The COMBO2-24V and VDSL2-24 deliver high density VDSL2 services, including seamless fallback to ADSL2+, Annex M, and bonding support, in a single-slot form factor that allows for 1:1 replacement of existing Calix ADSL cards for operational simplicity.

 

The Ethernet gateway acts as a gateway for the existing base of C7 multiprotocol line cards,allowing existing cards to leverage the Ethernet transport infrastructure of the EXA Powered C7.

 

The OLTG-4E delivers up to four GPON ports per card, supporting any mix of standard or extended reach GPON optical interface modules.

 

In related news, Calix recently reported that it raised $100 million in financing and added three new members to its board of directors. Company officials said the financing consists of $50 million in equity raised from existing Calix investors and $50 million in debt financing established with Silicon Valley Bank.
