Freescale Semicondutors Intros Mini USB Interface IC

Colorado-based provider of embedded semiconductors, Freescale Semiconductors has reportedly unveiled a mini USB interface IC that enables a single mini USB connector for external accessories including chargers, headsets, microphones and audio/data connections. This allows mobile device designers and manufacturers to create more compact consumer products

The MC34825 analog IC saves valuable board space that would have otherwise been occupied by multiple connections. It also extends battery life by supporting all-passive audio accessories such as stereo audio, microphone and cord remote control functionality.

Scott Ward, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Analog, Mixed-Signal & Power Division, said that the MC34825 leverages Freescale’s 15 years of experience in delivering portable power management solutions that help its customers differentiate in competitive consumer electronics markets.

“This IC helps consumer device manufacturers give consumers what they want – smaller form factors and a single connection that eliminates the need for multiple adapters and cords,” Ward added.

The MC34825 finds wide application in smartbooks, netbooks, eBooks, mobile phones, smartphones, portable media players, portable navigation devices, digital still cameras and camcorders.

Through an intelligent switching system, the MC34825 is able to identify up to 32 different accessory types, such as headsets, microphones and chargers and inform the host system, switching the signal or setting the charge current based on the plugged-in charger. It supports multiple charger types including AC, DC and USB. It also boasts other charging features including up to 28V OVP for the VBUS power input, ultra low operating current, a power-save mode and automatic detachment detection.

The MC34825 USB interface IC is available now from Freescale and its distributors. Suggested resale pricing for the MC34825 is $0.82 cents in 10,000-piece quantities.

Boasting an extensive portfolio of industry-leading multicore processors and DSPs, Freescale specializes in the design and manufacture of embedded semiconductors for the automotive, consumer, industrial and networking markets.
