UTStarcom Announces Softbank Telecom as First NetRing TN Customer

Softbank (News - Alert) Telecom Corp. a wholly owned subsidiary of Softbank Corp., has become first customer to commercially deploy UTStarcom’s NetRing Transport Network product portfolio.

 

According to UTStarcom (News - Alert) officials, NetRing TN includes new multiprotocol label switching/transport profile solutions designed to overhaul existing mobile backhaul networks, provide Ethernet services and deliver broadband aggregation applications.

 

“Our recent announcement of the expanded TN portfolio highlighted our new offerings and we’re delighted to have Softbank Telecom as our first customer deployment,” said Peter Blackmore (News - Alert), CEO and president of UTStarcom, in a statement.

 

Blackmore said that in addition to aiding network efficiency, the TN portfolio will help Softbank Telecom realize revenue generating opportunities in Japan.

 

The company officials said that Softbank Telecom will use UTStarcom’s NetRing TN products to help realize significant operating expense savings by offering a power efficient and space-optimized design with enhanced operation and maintenance capabilities.

 

“We are migrating to a network solution which unifies enterprise, consumer and mobile networks, with the aim of realizing the efficient utilization of the network and a reduction in operating costs,” said Junichi Miyakawa, executive vice president, director of Softbank Telecom Corp.

 

Miyakawa said that the company has confidence that the introduction of UTStarcom’s NetRing TN series will enable the company to meet those goals, being an effective solution for responding flexibly to a diverse range of new business needs and thus greatly contributing to the further expansion of the Softbank Group’s business and an increase in the profitability.

 

Softbank Telecom would use UTStarcom’s NetRing TN platform to migrate its existing aggregation network from legacy synchronous digital hierarchy/asynchronous transfer mode to a packet-based network for the delivery of high-speed services.

 

The company officials said that this will enable Softbank Telecom to offer new Ethernet-based enterprise services – in addition to high-speed broadband, voice, video services – in the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya regions.

UTStarcom is a major player in IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and international service and support.

 

The company sells its solutions to operators in both emerging and established telecommunications markets around the world.

 

TMCnet recently reported that UTStarcom Inc.announced a new contract with China’s Bureau of Radio and Television of Santai County, Sichuan Province, a subsidiary of SARFT.

 

SARFT, or the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, an organization directly under the State Council, the former Ministry of Radio, Film and Television, is the administrative authority in charge of Chinese radio, film and television industry.

As part of the contract, UTStarcom will help resume radio and television networks in earthquake-stricken areas in Sichuan province via its end-to-end RollingStream IPTV (News - Alert) platform.
