Switch and Data to Expand Atlanta Data Center Capacity

Switch and Data, a provider of network-neutral data center and Internet exchange services, plans to expand its data center capacity in Atlanta with its new site at 180 Peachtree Street.

The expansion is mainly aimed at meeting the growing demand from existing and new customers in the market, company officials said.

Switch and Data (News - Alert) will interconnect this new site to its existing Atlanta site providing immediate access to multiple network service providers.

According to the company officials, in September 2008, Switch and Data had signed a lease for the site for total term of 15 years, including extensions. The new site is located in an interconnected building which is already in use for data center operations. Company officials said that this will add more than 79,000 gross square feet to Switch and Data’s Atlanta Metro data center capacity, bringing total gross square feet to 106,000 in this market.

The site will be built out in phases, in pace with customer demand. Phase one will provide 500 cabinet equivalents of capacity and is expected to be open for customers in the third quarter of 2010. The site will yield a total of 1,450 cabinet equivalents when all phases are complete.

“Switch and Data facilities give our customers access to a critical mass of network and bandwidth providers across the broadest footprint of key communications hub markets in North America,” said Ernie Sampera (News - Alert), senior vice president and CMO for Switch and Data, in a statement.

Sampera said that the company’s Atlanta market expansion builds on its plan to help the customers accelerate their Internet-centric businesses with high performance and availability.

Company officials said that the company will also offer its PAIX Internet exchange service in its new Atlanta site.

PAIX pioneered commercial Internet exchange and provides a simple and cost effective way for Internet service providers, telecommunications companies, and content providers to peer their IP traffic to enhance performance and reduce cost.

In October, Switch and Data had announced that Internap (News - Alert) Network Services Corporation, a global provider of end-to-end Internet business solutions, has expanded its footprint to offer its Performance IP services in Switch and Data’s North Bergen, N.J. site.
