Oracle Debuts Database 11g Release 2 in GITEX

Business software solutions provider Oracle  reportedly announced the release Oracle (News - Alert) Database 11g Release 2 and is available for download at Oracle Technology Network.

The new edition builds on the features introduced in Oracle Database 11g to help organizations deliver better information throughout the enterprise, at a higher quality of service, and at a much lower cost, Oracle officials said.

“Our customers want features that offer better performance and availability, lower IT costs and ways to deliver better information to their business users,” said Andy Mendelsohn, senior vice president of database server technologies, Oracle, in a statement.
“The availability of Release 2 completes the vision of Oracle Database 11g to address today's business and IT challenges, and continues our strategy of helping customers deliver the highest quality of service at lower cost.”

An important feature included in the new release is the grid plug and play and new server pooling capabilities. With this feature, the Oracle Real Application Clusters help organizations reduce their server costs by streamlining the provisioning and management of consolidated database grids.

A new database option, Oracle RAC One Node is included in the new edition. This solution allows customers to more easily consolidate their less mission critical database environments on the grid with most of the redundancy and availability provided by Oracle RACs.

By combining Advanced Compression and Partitioning, the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 reduces storage costs by compressing the data as much as two to four times and simplifying the use of lower cost storage tiers.

To eliminate unused redundancy Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Automatic Storage Management, Oracle real application clusters, and active data guard allow storage and server resources to be used for both fault tolerance and running production workloads, keeping servers and storage from sitting idle waiting for failures. Another new feature is the edition-based redefinition that lets customer database applications be upgraded online, eliminating the need for separate upgrade environments.

Oracle Database 11g Release 2, in combination with the Oracle Database Machine, can deliver up to 10 times faster query performance, according to Oracle officials. Automated self-management capabilities help improve database administrator productivity over older versions of Oracle Database, and reduce the time required to upgrade from prior releases.

Carl Olofson, research vice president, IDC (News - Alert), said the enhancements to grid computing, storage management and administration capabilities included in Oracle Database 11g Release 2 help users achieve greater resource utilization of their information management systems while making the related system infrastructure and storage easier to manage and more affordable.

In September, Oracle announced that leading companies across the world have participated in the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 beta program, as well as partner training and enablement programs. Companies include Bentley Systems, Fujitsu America, HP and EDS, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Siemens AG, Sterling Commerce, Tata Consultancy (News - Alert) Services, Thomson Reuters, among others.
