TELUS Deploys Fujitsu FLASHWAVE Packet ONPs

Fujitsu (News - Alert) FLASHWAVE Packet Optical Networking Platforms, or “Packet ONPs,” has been selected for next generation converged Packet/TDM optical network of TELUS (News - Alert).

TELUS aims to enable next-generation IP, Ethernet and optical services through this network. The Canadian telecommunications provider is also focused on creating a scalable infrastructure that will encourage development and use of new multimedia applications by its business and residential customers.

According to Fujitsu, TELUS has begun the deployment of the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 and FLASHWAVE 4100 ES: Packet ONPs. They are also providing TELUS with network planning, management and professional services support.

Zouheir Mansourati, vice president of technology strategy for TELUS, said that this contract is part of their strategy to create a fully converged packet optical network throughout Canada, and place their customers at the forefront of broadband capabilities.

Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP combines the functionality of connection-oriented Ethernet and SONET/SDH with the flexibility of a ROADM (News - Alert) in a single shelf. Mansourati said that this combination offers several benefits: enables faster time to market, provides greatly expanded capacity for video and wireless applications and lowers the cost of delivering next-generation and legacy services.

Rod Naphan, vice president of product and strategic planning at Fujitsu Network Communications (News - Alert), said that both partners share a powerful network convergence vision that is enabled by Packet Optical Networking.

Additionally, Naphan said that the resulting packet optical transport and aggregation solution will allow TELUS to bring a range of advanced Ethernet, IP and broadband services to its business and residential customers.

Fujitsu provides business information technology and communications solutions. The company has also launched connection-oriented Ethernet, or “COE,” for its Flashwave 4100 ES platform.
