NetApp Enhances SnapMirror Thin Replication

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based provider of storage and data management solutions NetApp, Inc., has reportedly added native network compression to SnapMirror thin replication. The solution has now reportedly become more effective in lowering customers’ total cost of ownership.

SnapMirror allows up to 70 percent improvement in the network bandwidth efficiency achieved with SAN thin replication. SnapMirror network compression can reduce bandwidth requirements for Microsoft Exchange by 33 percent, Microsoft Home Directory by 63 percent and Oracle (News - Alert) Database by 72 percent, according to the company.

SnapMirror’s 65,000 licensees will benefit from the enhanced bandwidth. NetApp SnapMirror is effective not only in data backup but also in data replication. It provides multiple, instant copies for disaster recovery, decision support, business intelligence analysis, or to support a development and test environment. Consequently, customers need to maintain less storage and this saves them their overall power, space, and cooling costs in their data centers.

“SnapMirror is the backbone of our disaster recovery plan, and we rely on it and trust it to protect our critical customer financial data,” said Adam Clifton, senior systems administrator at North American Banking Company. “Not only has SnapMirror provided the data protection we need, but we have also been able to leverage its network compression capability to realize benefits across our network. We’ve been able to increase existing bandwidth utilization by 66 percent using SnapMirror’s compression capability, saving an estimated $10,000.”

“Customers have demonstrated that SnapMirror has been extremely successful as a disaster recovery tool,” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of solutions marketing at NetApp. “Today, it is much more than that. It has evolved into a multi-purpose tool for our customers to reduce their bandwidth and storage needs -- all to help them reduce costs and accelerate their business.”

TMCnet recently reported that NetApp has upgraded SnapManager for Oracle.
