Protech, an Elgin, Ill. provider of UPS maintenance services reportedly
said that electronic equipment can only tolerate a few cycles of power disruption. An increase in frequency of these disruptions will shut down these devices and this makes uninterruptible power systems a must have in any facility.
Power outages are common these days and generator power is used to supplement the demand. Protech said that when power goes out it takes 10 seconds or more before a facility's generator power is transferred to an emergency source. This time is long enough to damage equipment or data.
Facilities can avoid the damage by using a properly-maintained UPS that delivers immediate backup power to all connected equipment until power is restored or the equipment can be safely shut down.
Paul Robar, operations manager and senior field service engineer of Protech, stress that deployment of UPS equipment helps mission-critical systems to remain operational during power fluctuations and emergency power loss.
Facilities must also take steps to safeguard the UPS equipment itself with a preventive program. According to Robar, regular scheduled testing and maintenance of a facility's UPS will keep it reliably operating as designed.
Batteries are very crucial to proper functioning of UPS equipment and the number of discharges, heat or cold all adversely impact battery performance and life expectancy. Robar noted that even lowering the setting on an air conditioning unit can compromise UPS protection for an entire company.
It is also important to ensure that batteries are not being harmed by environmental issues and they are changed when they are nearing the end of their life expectancy. These steps are crucial for protecting a facility's critical loads.
Protech offers proactive maintenance programs that institute preventive UPS maintenance. This form of maintenance saves companies money in the long run by avoiding expensive emergency repairs, revenue losses due to downtime, and unsatisfied customers. The company also provides a turnkey battery disposal system that helps companies remain in compliance with the latest EPA regulations while protecting the environment.
