Intersil Corporation, a provider of design and manufacture of high-performance analog and mixed signal semiconductors, has signed an agreement to acquire
Quellan, Inc., a privately held company engaged in the design of high performance analog signal processing integrated circuits.
The boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved the merger. Intersil expects the acquisition will have an immaterial impact on revenue or earnings for the third quarter 2009 results.
"The Quellan products and analog signal processing design expertise in driving high speed signals over long distances are a perfect fit for Intersil," said Dave Bell, chief executive officer, Intersil in a statement.
Bell said that Quellan's Q:ACTIVE technology is complementary to the company’s video and DSL businesses, and the company believes that it will enable it to further penetrate new and existing high-margin markets.
Quellan's claims that its Q:ACTIVE technology delivers unmatched signal integrity for improved system throughput and density with dramatically reduced power consumption.
According to Quellan officials, the Santa Clara, California company founded in 2000 utilizes a proprietary Collaborative Signal Processing (CSP (
News -
Alert)) architecture to apply adaptive noise cancellation and equalization within the analog domain.
This unique approach enables Quellan's ICs to address signal loss, dispersion, skew and noise in high-speed signal processing applications.
Quellan's Q:ACTIVE technology will provide improved performance, smaller footprint and lower power solutions for communications and networking infrastructure, high-performance computing, storage and consumer electronics applications.
"We are very excited to be part of the Intersil family," said Tony Stelliga, chairman and chief executive officer, Quellan.
Stelliga said that Quellan's products are immediately applicable in many of Intersil's existing vertical markets, and the company believes that it will create opportunities in new areas of the analog IC market.
Back in July Intersil Corporation had
announced introduction of a new integrated circuit that offers industry-leading features for portable products where internal USB high-speed ports may need to share a single USB connector.
The device is also bidirectional and allows sharing of a host USB port between multiple outputs such as in desktop or laptop computers, portable mini-printers or docking.
