operate at 7200 RPM and offer storages up to 1 TB by incorporating two 500 GB platter disks.

According to Samsung, this drive meets datacenter requirements for additional storage. In addition to address the needs of storage and performance, the new drives are also more energy efficient. The new disk makes use of fewer mechanical components that makes it resistant to shock and data failure. And also increased area density per platter provides up to a 30 percent higher performance than a three-platter 1 TB in the same 3.5” form factor.
Samsung has made its high density hard drives for high-end computing environments to work silently by making use of its low noise operation technology SilentSeek and NoiseGuard, while being compliant with the RoHS restriction of hazardous substances directive. Other features include a 3.0Gbps SATA interface, Native Command Queuing features and a 16 MB/32MB buffer memory.
Every hard disk contains one or more flat disks that are used to actually hold the data in the drive. These disks, called platters, are composed of two main substances: a substrate material that forms the bulk of the platter and gives it structure and rigidity, and a magnetic media coating which actually holds the magnetic impulses that represent the data. Platter is where the data is actually recorded. Usually 1 TB drive is made with three or four platters but Samsung has developed an advanced 500 GB platter technology so that two platter 1 TB storage is achieved.
Samsung said it understood that customers require not only additional capacity but also high performance for their server and desktop storage systems, while promoting a green environment. The massive capacity-per-platter and high-performance features of the new Spinpoint F3 make it an attractive solution for driving the growth of high-density storage.
Recent estimates have also indicated that 500GB per platter and higher densities will experience over 15 percent annual growth in the next five years, with expectations that high density storage will become main stream for 3.5” storage beyond 2010.
