Genoa Color has enabled handset manufacturers to deliver longer battery life and vivid TV-quality color on high resolution mobile phone displays through its multi-primary Pixcale technology.
Genoa Color Technologies Ltd. licenses and develops Multi Primary technology, which significantly enhances image quality and power efficiency for a wide range of displays. Pixcale is Genoa’s proprietary multi-primary sub-pixel rendering technology that permits the implementation of multi-primary LCD on a standard TFT with standard drive electronics.
Handset makers can reduce up to 40 percent of power consumed by their mobile phone’s display and also offer users enhanced image quality at no extra cost. The company says the technology will blend well with phone displays as it has already been successfully implemented in digital projectors and numerous LCD TV panels.
Genoa Color stated that today’s mobile phones come with bigger screens, higher resolutions, mobile features and other applications that require more power. The turbulent economy is also forcing companies to design phones with reduced mobile device power consumption to attract more customers. By adopting the Pixcale technology, handset makers can improve the total battery life of a mobile device by 15 percent. This not only benefits service providers looking to monetize airtime, it also benefits end-user adopters of rich-media applications and content.
Genoa Color Technologies had demonstrated that its Pixcale panels are well suited for high-pixel density displays in terms of the reproduction of images and text. Combined with the increased color gamut and luminance efficiency, Pixcale panels provide excellent image quality and longer battery operation in mobile-device applications.
Genoa’s solution is said to have the market potential for two reasons. One reason is that the company is targeting the fastest growing segments in the mobile phone market, i.e., smart phones and high end feature phones and the other reason is Genoa's solution is minimally disruptive to a supply chain that is sometimes resistant to technological advances.
Genoa’s multi-primary technology augments standard RGB displays with a richer color palette comprised of RGBCY (red, green, blue, cyan, and yellow), resulting in a more vivid and natural display of media content. By making use of careful filter selection and Genoa’s Pixcale algorithms the technology delivers better brightness efficiency.
The key features of the technology are: 40 percent power saving in the power consumption of Pixcale display compared to equivalent RGB display; improved image and ambient light performance; minimal changes in LCD manufacturing processes and fit to existing LCD supply chain; and the technology are cost neutral.
