Toshiba Debuts New Portable Hard Drives

Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD), a division of Toshiba (News - Alert) America Information Systems, Inc., (TAIS) and a company specializing in small form factor hard disk drives (HDDs), has reportedly launched the next generation of its USB 2.0 portable hard drives in 500GB and 320GB capacities with added features for both first-time and advanced users.
 
The Toshiba Portable Hard Drives offers a flexible and complete solution to increase protection against computer failure and unauthorized access to data. Some of the key features of this newly launched storage products includes, complete system backup, password-protected encryption for added security and enhanced software features.
 
"We've increased the level of protection offered by our personal storage products, while making them easier to use," said Manuel Camarena, product manager for consumer storage at Toshiba Storage Device Division.
 
"Data backup usually isn't a consumer's first thought, but it is the most important consideration for preserving a lifetime of digital memories, entertainment libraries and the entire computer system. Enhanced backup features combined with password-protected encryption create a true digital safety net that any consumer can use to protect against system failure and unauthorized access to their digital content," added Camarena.
 
The company also clarified that for Windows users, it has included NTI BackupNow EZ software, which allows users to backup their complete system with a single click. The software enables the user to restore the complete system, even if Windows is unable to start. In addition, the software will scan a user's system and provide personalized recommendations on the best coverage for files, folders and the entire computer, said the company.
 
Moreover, for all Mac users, Toshiba's new backup drives come bundled with NTI Shadow 4 for Mac, which allows users to easily identify files and folders to back up and select a convenient schedule for storage.
 
Reportedly, Toshiba's external hard drives also are compatible with Apple's (News - Alert) Time Machine right out of the box.
 
On both the Windows and Mac software platforms, Toshiba has added a password-protected security option with up to 256-bit encryption to address the growing need for data protection. A new Drive Space Alert feature monitors the backup hard drive's capacity and signals users when storage capacity is running low.
 
Available in 500GB and 320GB capacities, Toshiba's new portable storage products provide consumers with storage for up to 142,000 digital photos, 131,000 digital music files, or 410 downloaded digital movies. Reportedly, they are available in choice of colors including Vivid White, Liquid Blue, Komodo Green and Rocket Red.
 
Toshiba's rugged, small and light personal storage products weighs merely six ounces and the approximate size of a postcard and is capable to withstand daily wear and tear with special features such as an internal shock sensor, ramp-loading technology and anti-slip footpads to help anchor the drive in place.
 
The new 500GB Toshiba Portable Hard Drive is priced at $149.99 (MSRP), while the 320GB version is priced at $119.99 (MSRP).
