New GPON Portfolio From Broadcom For China

Broadcom Corp, a prominent participant in the semi conductor industry for wired and wireless communications, recently announced its decision to launch a new generation of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) integrated access device (IAD) semi conductors specifically tailor made to suit the requirements of telecom operators and original equipment manufacturers or OEMs in China later this year.

The latest generation of GPON equipment, named the BCM6800, can provide better cost efficient optical network terminals (ONTs) or optical network units (ONUs) for deploying in telecom carrier systems. With the BCM6800, operators can reap the advantages of enhanced bandwidth for such products as top-quality triple play offerings, HD video, gaming, wireless and VoIP propelled FTTH and FTTN devices.

Broadcom’s (News - Alert) GPON offerings will provide Chinese telecom operators never seen before heights of amalgamation and enhanced output performance. They will deliver to their prospective Chinese clients a GPON framework that is focused on providing better output and a device that is high on capabilities, capitalizing on the company’s expertise in the Chinese broadband access segment.

The latest GPON offering is built on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) G.984 that is specifically intended for GPON and provides Chinese operators a globally accepted norm for PON installations leveraging benefits from economies of scale derived from inter-functionality and propelled by worldwide installations. GPON also provides network scheduling functionalities with current time division multiplexing (TDM) voice frameworks to facilitate the movement of carriers from current TDM traffic to an improved network. Operators can then enjoy improved return on investments on traditional offerings due to a reduction in maintenance and running expense.

“Broadcom is pleased to provide our Chinese customers with a reliable and cost effective, stable, long term source of GPON silicon,” Greg Fischer, vice president and general manager of Broadcom’s carrier access segment, said in a statement. “Our presence and commitment to the carrier market in China is well established with leadership in DSL, Ethernet and wireless LAN products. The global GPON standard provides next generation FTTH and FTTN opportunities for China and we look forward to extending our leading access technologies and investments in this area."

Broadcom is expected to commence commercial manufacturing of the new GPON appliances later this year and currently, supports customer designs robustly.
