Veryant And Donatos Pizza Modernize COBOL Applications With Java

Donatos Pizza is a quick-service restaurant chain with around 200 restaurants in six Midwestern and southern states in the United States was able to preserve their company’s application investments thanks to a partnership with Veryant, a provider of software that optimizes IT resources, improves business performance and revitalizes programming resources.

Working together, the companies were able to extend COBOL applications and data investments can through Java technology. Specifically, they were able to achieve modernization and Java-integration capabilities thanks to Veryant’s isCOBOL Application Platform Suite (APS) software.

isCOBOL was used by Donatos Pizza to modernize its COBOL-based point-of-sale (POS) system and move to a Java-based thin client platform.. By using isCOBOL APS as the bridge between the old and new solutions, Donatos Pizza was able to avoid the difficulties involved in changing processes to fit an off-the-shelf solution.

isCOBOL provided enough flexibility and freedom to execute the transition plan according to Donatos Pizza’s schedule and with the new GUI interface, the system enabled the old and new systems to access the same ISAM data files.

isCOBOL APS combines the optimized, business-oriented nature of COBOL with the portability of the Java platform. With this, COBOL programmers will be able to automatically generate Java classes with isCOBOL 2009. These Java classes will then enable Java programs to directly access COBOL data without proprietary middleware or time-consuming reengineering which improves productivity and eases integration between legacy and new application environments.

Also, isCOBOL APS simplifies deployment and eliminates the need to recompile code for each hardware platform on which the application should run. In addition, isCOBOL APS improves the time to market through streamlined development and deployment. Since there is no need for multiple licenses, costs also get reduced substantially.
