BroadLight Picks Cadence Encounter Digital Implementation Systems for Designing GPON Devices

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. announced that BroadLight has selected its Encounter Digital Implementation Systems for designing Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) devices.

Cadence helps in the creation of integrated circuits and electronics and its software and hardware, methodologies and services enable customers to design and verify advanced semiconductors, consumer electronics, networking and telecommunications equipment, and computer systems.

BroadLight was successful in improving the frequency requirement for its network processor family besides also reducing power consumption by more than 20 percent by using Cadence Encounter Digital Implementation Systems. It is best suited as a RTL-to-GDSII digital design and signoff solution for BroadLight’s highly integrated GPON devices.

“Extending our competitive differentiation in cost, power, and performance to our leading GPON solutions required unique design expertise and a highly capable design solution,” said Igor Elkanovich, vice president of VLSI for BroadLight.

“Our team was able to quickly adopt and ramp the Cadence Encounter Digital Implementation System into our production flow to improve our network processor frequency by 30 percent while reducing overall power by 20 percent. We achieved these design targets more efficiently and with better performance, die size and time to market than ever before,” said Elkanovich.

The EDI System features a configurable and extensible, high-capacity, scalable design solution which offers flat and hierarchical design closure and signoff analysis. It also includes low-power, advanced-node and mixed-signal design capabilities in a single integrated environment.

Cadence design-for-manufacturing (DFM) technologies forms part of the EDI System which allows early identification, analysis and repair of yield-limiting design elements present at advanced nodes. The system delivers interoperability and co-design with package, logic and custom IC implementation and sign off.

Chi-Ping Hsu, senior vice president of implementation R&D at Cadence, said that BroadLight’s migration to Encounter Digital Implementation System is for achieving differentiated results for their designs.

The adoption of a full EDI System RTL-to-GDSII and signoff solution for their GPON processors has helped BroadLight to benefit from better designs and reduced time to market.

BroadLight is a fabless semiconductor company supplying semiconductor devices and solutions required by equipment suppliers of FTTH applications. The company provides optical access solutions and also home networking which facilitates the delivery of highly integrated, end-to-end (E2E) solutions from the central office to the customer premise.
