JDSU Announces 450mW 5100 Series Pump Laser

JDSU, a provider of optical products and test and measurement solutions for the communications industry, has announced the availability of the 450mW 5100 Series pump laser for network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) and service providers.
 
According to the company, the new 5100 Series meets stringent quality and reliability requirements to power undersea optical amplifiers that are needed to transmit fiber optic signals along cables that span thousands of kilometres along the ocean floor, acting as critical trans-continental links for broadband communications.
 
It also helps network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) and service providers design higher bandwidth undersea networks that can support more wavelengths or higher data rates.
 
"With more than 600,000 terrestrial pump devices deployed since 2000, JDSU's (News - Alert) customers can take comfort knowing that the 5100 Series is based on an extremely reliable and proven design," said Toby Strite, High Power Lasers marketing director for the Communications and Commercial Optical Products business segment at JDSU.
 
Company officials say its terrestrial pump laser platform has achieved 12 billion field hours with a failure in time (FIT) rate of only 2.2, the lowest reported failure rate in the industry.
JDSU offers a broad line of pump lasers for optical amplification. The 980 nm products that are used in Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers offer operating power levels from 90 mW to 600 mW. The 2600 Series, 2700 Series and 2900 Series (HI1060) products are all offered with tight tracking options useful to customers utilizing the internal monitor photodiode to control the pump laser bias.
The latest 5100 Series belongs to company’s existing portfolio of undersea isolators and PIN detectors manufactured in Shenzhen, China. In addition, company’s fiber optic components share a common undersea manufacturing infrastructure with a very low fixed cost. Built on proven terrestrial design, each component are manufactured in high volumes on site, providing a stable supply chain that helps JDSU in lowering material costs and maintain short lead times for its customers.
 
JDSU technology portfolio is a key enabler for optical solutions in industries such as broadband communications, semiconductor manufacturing, document authentication, brand protection, and biotechnology.
