Eaton Launches New Advanced Monitored Enclosure Based Power Distribution Units

Eaton has reportedly announced the launch of its new product line, the Advanced Monitored enclosure based Power Distribution Units (ePDU), which gather and pass power consumption data to the network administrators for review, assessment and control at the plug and socket level itself.
ePDU’s are designed for IT environments, yield the best customer oriented cost control indicative results when connected to the Ethernet, measure power consumption at the equipment level, are rack mountable, shock generation proof, and guaranteed to work 24 x7 x 365 at 99.99 percent efficiency or more. They protect the individual as well as overall equipment from above high and below normal current fluctuations that can seriously damage by using built-in individual shrouded circuit breakers or fusing solutions. 

They are available in ranges: from 1.44 kilo Watts (kW) to over 23 kW power supply and 50 amps to 80 amps power input; of functionalities including basic, monitored, hybrid, metered, switched and managed; to suit US and North American, European, and global markets; that accept any standard internationally accepted electrical and electronic distribution inputs according to single phase, three phase, National Electrical Manufacturers Association, and International Electrotechnical Commission specifications.

"IT managers can use the data gathered from the Advanced Monitored ePDU products to evaluate server performance, allocate power costs and even lower the aggregate power bill," said Michael Camesano, product manager, Eaton (News - Alert) ePDU products and enclosures. "Eaton offers the ability to customize the ePDU product without paying for functions that are unnecessary for your organization."


Camesano cited an example of a specific customer that had a 20-rack data center with an assorted collection of servers from different manufacturers that centrally managed its various departments, and wanted to budget cost control measures for power consumption and air-conditioning. 

“With receptacle-level control from the Advanced Monitored ePDU, the IT department could track the power consumption within their data center per device, know which devices were in service per division in the organization and appropriately allocate costs to their internal customers," said Camesano.
ePDU’s may also be considered as Ethernet enabled PDU’s considering the way data is transferred.
