LynuxWorks' BlueCat 5.6 Enhances Performance of Intel Atom

LynuxWorks has announced that its BluCat Linux 5.6 operating system (BCL OS) interoperates with the latest versions of the Intel Atom processor Z5xx (IAP Z5) series platform--to ramp up performance speeds for third generation partnership project mobile communication back-end devices as well as medical, military and infotainment solutions.

The lean and compact open source Linux architected BCL OS facilitates system designers to conceive and prototype lower energy consumption devices that generate less heat thus eliminating the requirement of fans. Manufacturers then translate these designs into relatively small footprint and portable products that smoothly function in thermally demanding environments where variations are as low as 40° C below zero to as high as 85° C above.

The IAP Z5 single core, micro-architecture processor, as a stand lone device, allows designers to generate fanless systems by using either the 2.0 Watt or the 2.2 Watt thermal design power options. It has an embedded lifecycle support suitable for in-vehicle infotainment, medical, retail, transaction solutions, kiosks, point-of-service terminals, gaming, industrial control and automation.

BCL OS is reportedly being considered very seriously by the military as a money saving option when compared with current costly proprietary OS’s. With BCL OS also used and proven in several similar field applications such as car stereos, the combination with IAP Z5 yields agile, compatible and cost effective results.

The first board hosting the IAP Z5 series and the BCL OS is the Portwell’s PEB-2738 that is exclusively designed to function at a very low power consumption of less than 10 watts at full system loading and is used in medical equipment besides the same devices driven by the IAP Z5.

“It's a natural fit for us to optimize BlueCat to take advantage of all of the enhanced features in the Intel (News - Alert) Atom processor. Using the Portwell PEB-2738 hardware as the first port of BlueCat offers our customers in the medical, military and industrial sectors a complete hardware and software platform," said George Brooks, director, business development at LynuxWorks, in a statement.
