Zhone Technologies Releases New SLMS Access Operating System Software

Zhone Technologies, a provider of multi-service access network (MSAN) solutions, recently released its latest Single Line Multi System (SLMS) access operating system which is the common software base for all its platforms.
The release coincided with the company’s milestone for five million ports in its cumulative shipments made since it started in 1999. These five million ports support more than 700 operators in 70 countries all over the world for their multi-service access network (MSAN) solutions.
"In contrast to the overall tenor of the times, we're excited about the trends we see in continued customer demand for new network capabilities, as telecommunications infrastructure improvements remain high on priority lists worldwide, whether prompted by government initiatives or fundamental customer demand and competition," said Steven Glapa, Zhone's vice president of product management and marketing.
"This SLMS release is an indication of the substantial, steady R and D investments we continue to make in order to seize new opportunities in growth segments like GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) and EFM (Electromagnetic Frequency Management),” Glapa added.

The v1.15 SLMS release is a mark of Zhone’s response to what individual operators need. Included in the latest release is Internet Group Management Protocol snooping that enables replication of broadcast video channels at the line card level.

The release also supports T.38 fax relay support for Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert), Media Gateway Control Protocol, and H.248 so that older fax machines are also able to use the network. Customer-provided equipment control through the element management system saves operating costs by providing zero-touch remote management of devices at the customer’s end. V1.15 SLMS also allows access of control lists and supports the industry’s standard approach to control over subscriber access. An alternative server for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) allows further flexibility for operators.
"We believe Zhone is a leader among access vendors, with scale and sophistication of their products and organization well-suited to operators whose services and networks are growing rapidly in scope, and whose needs go further than a one-size-fits-all approach can support. Because of this architectural and application flexibility, we believe Zhone is very well positioned to take advantage of the U.S. broadband stimulus programs," said Jeff Hynen, directing analyst for broadband and video at Infonetics Research.
