Report: Increased Adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet Servers Anticipated

A recent report by Dell’Oro Group, a networking and telecommunications industry research firm, reportedly says that key factors needed to enable rapid adoption of 10 Gbps Ethernet server are falling into place.

 

The Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group’s 5-Year Forecast report indicated that the strong adoption of 10 Gbps Ethernet Server will be seen for both ‘network adapter cards’ as well as “LAN on Motherboard."
 

In general, a network adapter card/network interface controller network interface card/LAN adapter is a computer hardware component that facilitates computers to communicate over a computer network.

 

LAN on motherboard embeds Ethernet circuits directly on the motherboard rather than using a separate network adapter that has to be plugged in. Instead of a separate network interface card, which is used to access a local-area network, the circuits attached to the motherboard to the job.

 

“Technical and cost hurdles are being overcome so that the combined server and network connection – transceiver, cable and switch – can not only deliver 10 Gbps of throughput, but also do so in a very cost effective manner,” said Seamus Crehan, a vice president at Dell’Oro Group. “Furthermore, we anticipate major technology shifts toward copper-based and on-motherboard technologies, all of which will have a major impact on market prices.”

 

Last year, Dell’Oro released a report about 10Gbps Ethernet Network Adapter market. The report indicated that the market is benefiting from the impact of server virtualization, and the  growth in the controller segment saw double-digit increases, especially in the third quarter.

 

The Dell’Oro Group report published last year also indicated that the market revenue and port shipments for the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter market grew by nearly 50 percent sequentially, primarily due to data center demand for faster connections and a unified fabric.

 

According to the Dell’Oro Group, its report offers a comprehensive overview of the 10 Gbps Ethernet Network Adapter market. The report includes tables covering manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, and port shipments for 10Gbps Ethernet adapter cards and 10Gbps Fibre Channel over Ethernet cards, in addition to unit shipments for 10 Gbps Ethernet silicon controllers.
