Seiko Intros New Thermal Printer Mechanisms for Mobile Devices

The Thermal Printer division of Seiko Instruments USA (SIU) has introduced a new generation of 2” and 3” low-voltage direct thermal printer mechanisms for mobile devices.

 

The LTPD and CAPD models offer a wide range of design advancements, including a reduced footprint, improved print speed, better reliability, and easier integration.

 

“The huge range of improvements in these new models demonstrates our commitment to developing small and dependable solutions that can accelerate time to market for our OEM customers,” said said Kaz Onishi, vice president and general manager at SIU.

 

The new mechanisms free critical design real estate, accelerate transaction performance, as well as lower end-user downtime to help hardware engineers who are designing point-of-sale (POS) terminals, portable medical equipment, and mobile printers.

 

In comparison to previous models, the LTPD and CAPD printer mechanisms are smaller than preceding models. Officials said that the new features reduce mechanical real estate requirements in the OEM device.

 

Also, the new angled paper guide shortens the distance between the printer and the paper roll, which reduces overall design depth. Plus, officials said that the flexible print circuit (FPC), connecting the mechanism to the PCB, is also redesigned with a smaller, 0.5mm pitch and a framed ground line that protects against electrostatic discharge, eliminating the need for extra wiring.

 

Officials said that new features and configuration alternatives give design engineers integration flexibility and broader application suitability. LTPD models include a choice of horizontal and vertical mechanical orientation. Officials said that the mechanism motor is mounted either behind or below the print head and platen roller.

 

In addition to USB, Serial, and Parallel interface support, ASIC and interface board alternatives are available. Also, all models support EZ-OP clamshell style and auto-loading paper replacement.

 

Moreover, officials said that all mechanisms are rated for a minimum 31 miles (50km) printed output and a minimum of 100 million pulses.

 

The CAPD models combine the printer mechanism and auto-cutter, and come with a new design that houses both components in a single rigid assembly.

 

At present, the printer drivers are available for Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista, OPOS, and Linux operating systems, according to the company.
