Intersil Intros High-Speed Voice and Data Switches

Intersil has launched the ISL54210 and ISL54211, two highly-integrated devices that strengthen the company’s position in the compact, high-performance mixed audio and data switches market.

Both devices boast a combination of superior low distortion performance, high-speed USB 2.0 data rates, and use an effective suppression technology to eliminate clicks and pops in handheld devices.

Elaborating on the new switches, Intersil’s officials explain that these new devices integrate Intersil’s MP3/USB 2.0 high-speed data interconnect and ultra low distortion audio switching technology along with advanced ‘click/pop’ elimination circuitry in a tiny micro TQFN package.

Because the new devices allow audio and data paths in small handheld products such as MP3 players and smartphones to share a common mini-jack or mini-USB connector, they free up connector pins for other functions or eliminate the need for additional connectors.

The company’s officials further note that the digital audio file download and synchronization times can be shortened by incorporating USB 2.0 high speed interconnect capability. Also, a high off-isolation mute mode eliminates annoying clicks and pops during power up and power down. Equipped with these features, both the ISL54210 and ISL54211 are able to successfully deliver a low cost, compact solution for congested connectors in handheld products such as MP3 players and cell phones, as well as docking stations.

Intersil has optimized the ISL54210 for powering off an LDO regulator and it also includes circuitry for the detection of the USB VBUS voltage, which is used to switch between the audio and USB signal sources. The ISL54211 can operate off a Lithium Ion battery supply. The device has logic control pins that are 1.8V logic compatible, which allow for direct control via a standard microcontroller.

The company recently introduced the ISL54406, a highly integrated, ultra-low distortion stereo audio switch that eliminates unwanted clicks and pops typically caused by powering up and down, muting on and off, and switching between audio sources.

The product is ideal for compact MP3 players, docking speaker systems, cell phones, portable DVD players and sound cards.
