Broadcom Advances the Connected Digital Home

Broadcom Corporation, a provider of semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, recently announced its plans to display a range of new technologies in at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES (News - Alert)). The company hoped that the display would promote a fully connected digital home by improving the way customers use consumer electronics (CE) to distribute digital content in their the home.
"Our message at CES is clear - the time has come to combine the television with the Internet," said Scott McGregor, president and chief executive officer of Broadcom Corporation.
"Consumers increasingly expect to be connected to everything at any time, and our technology on display at CES showcases how Broadcom (News - Alert) enables Internet connectivity for consumer electronics products that traditionally have been stand-alone devices. Device manufacturers want innovative technologies that allow them to push the boundaries of product design and deliver the most advanced features, and Broadcom is providing the technology that will usher in a new entertainment, information and connectivity experience for consumers," he added.
Among the various technologies showcased by Broadcom were Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) Connected Digital Home, Blu-ray Disc, Mobile Multimedia, Cable and Satellite Set-top Boxes, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Advanced DSL Communications, Voice-over-IP, Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi)/WLAN, Digital Television, IPTV (News - Alert) and so on.
Broadcom displayed the DLNA-enabled connected home and demonstrated the streaming capabilities of Netflix on a Blu-ray disc system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution that will be of great help to manufacturers of such devices. This will provide for high-definition (HD) video playback at 1080p resolution, clear movie streaming and so on.
The company also promoted its new mobile multimedia processor, the VideoCore III at the event. The new processor was designed to be power efficient and will enable long periods of media application usage on mobile phones.
Bluetooth technology was also featured at CES as Broadcom. The company is a strong supplier of this technology. Broadome will also host a cable set-top box demo and introduce a worldwide reference network in addition to promoting several other technologies as well.
Broadcom is based in Irvine, California, with branches and research facilities located throughout North America, Asia and Europe.
