In an effort to recommend a mobile PC design based on customer demands, the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council, and Phoenix Technologies as principal financer, initiated the “Reinvent Mobile” movement to “Track the Yack” by “listening in” and analyzing thousands of opinions regarding Mobile PC’s. The investigations, based on information gathered by using an eavesdropping program from Fractal Analytics, threw up ten thousand current views, as well as futuristic wish-lists.
A comprehensive review of four thousand digital conversations and comments on blogs, e-forums, and feed-back related Web sites yielded several painful, existing and common experiences. In descending order:
1. Apathetic Customer Service
2. Shockingly high cost to rectify
3. Eventual obsolescence resulting from points one and two
4. eWaste generation, again as a result of points one and two
5. Accessing the Internet and other devices via wireless means, with an emphasis on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, is a drag sometimes as connectivity may not be continuous
6. Memory and speed affected by clutter from programs
7. Initial high down time due to excessive boot-up time
8. Non-essential program add-ons reduce speed of computing
9. Trial application offers and pop-ups distract and defocus
10. Insufficient RAM, low grade graphics and frequently failing mother-boards add to woes
11. Power Management to be optimized
12. Battery back-up to be enhanced
13. The paradox of selecting Laptop weighing less, resulting in eventually sacrificing performance, still remains
14. Poor aesthetics and styling
15. Thermal mismanagement results in uncomfortably hot areas
16. Noise from within the system is an irritant
17. Improper Human Computer Interfaces (HCI), or Man-Machine Interfaces (MMI), cause stress
18. Speaker sound lacks consistency in clarity and audibility
The desire to improve keeps “Track the Yack” ongoing and continuous. "We will continuously calibrate how the vendor community is performing in meeting end-user desires and wants," noted Donovan Neale-May, executive director of the CMO Council.
Data garnered from the global community is passed on to Mobile PC architects and provides consumer criteria for future builds. The process, being interactive, also welcomes upcoming concepts, designs and prototypes to be reviewed by prospective customers.
The
Phoenix HyperSpace application is a serious attempt at addressing Mobile PC users concerns. It comes on instantly, is always connected to the Internet thereby allowing Web-based applications to be launched before an OS boots up, enhances battery life, and is secure.
