Strategic Test, a provider of development kits and embedded processor modules, recently launched
‘TX Development Kit-5’, a new hardware reference platform specially developed for the Freescale i.MX27 multimedia applications processor.
Supporting both Linux 2.6 and Microsoft (

Alert) Embedded Windows CE 5.0 and 6.0, the new development kit is a ready-to-use development system for creating applications based on the Freescale i.MX27 processor.
Based around the
TX27 module, the development kit-5 incorporates a carrier board as well. The Kit along with the onboard TX27 i.MX27 module, offers developers with tools that will enable them to achieve the fastest time-to market for new product designs.
Launched in 2007 by Strategic Test, the TX27 SODIMM (small outline dual in-line memory module) is built on Freescale's i.MX27 processor clocked at 400 MHz. This system-on-module (SoM) is also integrated with 64 MB mobile DDR-SDRAM, 128 MB NAND Flash memory, 10/100 Ethernet MAC, USB 2.0 Host/OSG, LCD controller, MPEG4 H.263/H.264 hardware CODEC for D1 video and a camera interface as well. It is specifically targeted at embedded applications where size, high CPU-performance and the lowest power consumption are critical factors.
The Freescale i.MX27 multimedia applications processor is based on an
ARM926EJ-S microprocessor core that offers high-performance with low-power consumption, which is required by modern digital devices like feature-rich cellular phones, portable media players, mobile gaming machines, personal digital assistants (PDAs), wireless portable DVD players, digital cameras and more.
Leveraging on 90 nm technology, the i.MX27 clocked at 400 MHz also adds a H.264 hardware codec for D1 high resolution video processing, an Ethernet 10/100 MAC, security, plug-and-play connectivity, and more power management features, says company.
Other key features of the TX Development Kit-5 carrier board include: socket for TX27 SODIMM, where all pins from SODIMM are brought out to header connectors; UCB1400 CODEC and touch screen controller; two SD (standard definition) card sockets; VGA (visual graphics array) via D-SUB 15 pin connector; LCD 40-pin header; 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connector; USB 2.0 connectors; two RS232 headers; JTAG interface; and 5 V from USB or via screw terminal.
Strategic Test said that both TX27 and Development Kit-5 are the first Freescale processor-based products from the company and are part of a new series of Freescale products, which is anticipated to be released in 2008 and 2009. Strategic Test basically supplies test and measurement products, Intel (News - Alert)/Marvel PXA320 and PXA270 development kits and embedded processor modules.
