Axis Network Technology Launches Remote Radio Head Platform for LTE

Axis Network Technology, a provider of software re-configurable digital radios, subsystems and IP to OEMs, announced the launch of a family of Remote Radio Heads (RRH) for OEM deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) networks worldwide.

The use of an RRH allows the radio to be located alongside the antennas and physically separate from the base station (BTS), removing the losses associated with long cable runs -- typically around 3dB per cable -- by replacing them with an optical fiber data interface, a media statement said.

According to AxisNT, the new RRH offers flexible multi-gigabit BTS connections, communicating via Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI), Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) or custom original equipment manufacturer (OEM) fiber interfaces.

The new LTE RRHs are based on the same design principles of AxisNT’s successful WiMAX (News - Alert) RRH that has been deployed worldwide. The new RRHs provide 2 x 10W at 64QAM of diversity multi-carrier RF power using AxisIPR advance amplifier technology, operating over the 2.3 - 2.7GHz E-UTRA frequency bands, the company said.

A single multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) RRH, with 10W output power, will provide greater coverage than a 40W single-input, single-output (SISO) ground based BTS, with power and energy consumption reduced to a fraction of the cost.

Other important features of AxisNT RRHs include automatic calibration for transmit, receive and PA bias control loops; OBSAI RP3-01 and CPRI V2 digital baseband interfaces with one or two optical connectors; an advanced failure mode prediction capability, as well as inherent fiber and RF redundancy.

The distributed RRH approach, with highly efficient digital-to-RF conversion and amplification, adopted in designing LTE base stations significantly reduces both CAPEX and OPEX (News - Alert) of the overall system as well as maintenance costs, and accelerates time-to-deployment, AxisNT said.

"We are already hearing from our WiMAX customers how effective our RRHs are in reducing their deployment costs and speeding rollout of their networks," commented Michel Vieuxmaire, sales director of AxisNT, in a statement. "Now OEMs developing networks for LTE will be able to enjoy the same benefits, with RRHs customized to their own mechanical and interface requirements."

Axis Network Technology joined the WiMAX Forum, a non-profit organization committed to promoting and certifying interoperable WiMAX products, in March 2008, said a news report.
