NZ to accelerate satellite communications over WAN and also to tremendously reduce satellite bandwidth costs.

) is a provider of application acceleration solutions over the Wide Area Network (WAN). Antarctica NZ is responsible for developing, managing and executing New Zealand Government interests in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
Expand states that their WAN Accelerators use low latency, lossless techniques that work on all applications to consistently deliver average bandwidth which increases between 100 percent and 400 percent. Expand's Quality of Service (QoS) enforcement also ensures that applications run unimpeded on WAN.
Expand Networks has stated that the investments in their WAN Optimization technology provide multiple benefits for organizations, particularly in the most challenging of economic conditions. Their technology can help by enabling multiple projects including Satellite, Consolidation and Virtualization initiatives without the need to upgrade the infrastructure.
Antarctica NZ manages Scott Base, the Antarctic research station of New Zealand. The base is nearly 4000 km away from the Antarctic NZ headquarters in Christchurch and uses Telecom
NZ satellite network for communications. Antarctica NZ employed Expand’s Accelerators to maximize its 64/256K frame relay connection, combating WAN latency issues with its Citrix-based applications and remote web browsing.
reported that the connectivity to the base was barely above dial-up speeds. The connection can vary from 64kbit/s during winter (March to September) to 128kbit/s during summer (October to February). The restriction on the data link speed is largely financial. And Antarctica NZ chose technology from Expand Networks to improve the connectivity.
Mike Mahon, IT administrator for Antarctica NZ commented, “The clever combination of compression, acceleration and caching that goes on within the Expand Accelerators has considerably reduced our latency issues, both within Citrix and with web browsing. Despite a 600ms latency on our satellite link the data speeds we are experiencing are markedly improved, and are now really rather impressive for a 7,600 km round trip just to reach the internet connection! Saving $2,000 per month on 8Kb in effective additional bandwidth also gave us an ROI (Return On Investment) in just four months.”
Officials explain that Scott Base is located in the remotest of places and researchers experienced considerable drawbacks working on limited bandwidths. But buying from satellite in order to increase bandwidth capacity is very costly. That is the reason Expand technology would come in handy in optimizing the available WAN bandwidth.
