Information Technology -EMC Unveils New Unified Storage System

Information infrastructure solutions provider EMC (News - Alert) Corporation announced the launch of its new EMC Celerra NX4 unified storage system that consolidates network attached storage (NAS), iSCSI and fiber channel storage area network (SAN) in a single multi-protocol system.

EMC officials said that the new entry-level unified storage platform, which is an addition to company’s Celerra series of unified storage systems, provides advanced functionality cost-effectively. It is ideally suited for small to medium-sized businesses and as well remote offices who are aiming to consolidate their distributed file servers and storage onto a single, easy to use platform.

The platform can be powered up and configured using EMC's Celerra Startup Assistant software. The platform features centralized Web-based Celerra Manager software that simplifies system administration with easy to use wizards and automated volume management, thereby allowing system administrators to provision a file system quickly.

EMC Celerra NX4 is based on company’s CLARiiON AX4 system architecture, which provides high-levels of data availability and reliability for a system in this class.

Celerra that features thin provisioning simplifies storage management and also enhances storage efficiency by combining virtualization of storage to hosts and users along with advanced automated safeguards.

EMC Celerra NX4 supports Microsoft (News - Alert), UNIX, Linux and VMware ESX Server operating systems and other applications including Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, Oracle, VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and VMware Site.

EMC Celerra NX4 can support up to 60 terabytes of data capacity and is also configurable with up to 60 high-capacity SATA disk drives and/or high-performance SAS (News - Alert) drives.

"EMC's entry-level Celerra NX4 builds on the notable success of the Celerra NS20 and NS40 unified storage systems, helping customers control costs and consolidate distributed server and storage resources while assuring enterprise-class reliability and data protection," said Charles King, principal analyst at  Pund-IT, in a statement:

Rich Napolitano, senior VP and general manager, EMC storage division, said: "EMC's expertise in IP storage continues to yield the most cost-effective, reliable, and easy to use unified storage systems in the industry, fueling over fifty percent year-over-year revenue growth for our Celerra product line in the first half of 2008."
Celerra’s SnapSure software facilitates instant data protection and also consumes less storage space, providing read-only and read-writable logical point-in-time copies of data, which can be leveraged for user-driven data recovery and online backups, says company.

EMC Celerra Replicator software can be used for local and remote replication. With this, business critical data can be automatically replicated to one or more secondary locations to ensure seamless business continuity and data protection.

EMC Corporation (News - Alert) is a developer and provider of information infrastructure technology and solutions that facilitates organizations of all sizes to transform the way they compete and create value from their information.
