New Edge Awarded for MPLS over DSL

New Edge Networks (News - Alert), the business communications unit of EarthLink Inc., says it received the 2008 North American Telecommunications Service of the Year Award. The company says it received this award for development of a service that lets the companies to prioritize their network data traffic over standard DSL access.

Every year, one company that demonstrates excellence in service leadership gets the Frost & Sullivan’s (News - Alert) annual telecommunications service of the year award. The company also needs to focus on its customers’ needs and profitability goals to get this award. New Edge will receive its award during a banquet in its honor on Sept. 15 in San Francisco.

While presenting the award to New Edge, Frost & Sullivan, a global research and growth consulting firm, said that the new service offering “radically changes the network landscape.” New Edge achieves this by eliminating a “major impediment” to the adoption of new IP-based services and by allowing the bi-directional use of Multi Protocol Label Switching classes of service over DSL. Egged by the customer demand for a service that fills a large gap between DSL and T1 pricing, New Edge developed MPLS over DSL. New Edge says the company is proud of Frost & Sullivan’s special recognition.

New Edge says it installed carrier-class gateway switches at various regional aggregation points around the country to introduce MPLS over DSL. The company says it also can expand network capacity, improve service and add traffic routing diversity with this multi-million-dollar network infrastructure investment. Users can mix and match access technologies, such as DSL, T1, and private lines, to meet the needs of each location with MPLS over DSL. This does not include the key values of MPLS networks: data traffic prioritization with classes of services and any-to-many communications, company officials say.

“As applications like SAP (News - Alert) filter down to smaller businesses and technologies like VoIP become more attractive, it is necessary for enterprise that wish to use these tools effectively to strengthen their network infrastructure to support them,” said Roopa Shree, a research analyst for Frost & Sullivan.
