University of Michigan Selects ExteNet Systems

University of Michigan (U-M) has selected ExteNet Systems, Inc. to design, build and operate an open distributed wireless network for use by multiple carriers.

Officials with ExteNet Systems said that the scope of the project at U-M covers both outdoor and indoor space at all three campuses -- Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint.

Company officials said that the distributed antenna system (DAS) network is designed to provide cellular coverage to provide students, faculty, staff and guests access to seamless wireless coverage throughout the campus.

The distributed network is planned to cover in excess of 200 buildings, including dorms, classrooms, administrative offices, the stadium, arenas and the medical complex.

“ExteNet's expanded wireless infrastructure is designed to support the university's mobility needs,” said Laura Patterson, chief information officer and associate vice president of information and technology services at U-M, in a statement.

“Our overall IT strategy includes reducing traditional telecommunications infrastructure costs and enhancing cellular coverage for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus,” said Patterson.

As part of the pact, ExteNet will work closely with university and carrier personnel throughout the implementation to ensure that the network meets the overall coverage objectives for each campus.

“We are proud to be working with U-M on this exciting project, which will result in high levels of wireless coverage and capacity to improve campus life for all members of the university community,” said Ross Manire, chief executive officer of ExteNet.

Manire said that it’s a true partnership working together with the university and carriers to provide the seamless connectivity that students, faculty and guests deserve in a campus environment.

In March, TMCnet reported that ExteNet Systems announced that it deployed wireless indoor networks at two Texas hotels for multiple wireless service providers.

The company explained that the networks are located near the reach of the Cowboy stadium and the installed conventional indoor technology and patented iDuct technology makes use of the hotel’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) ductwork to distribute wireless signals.
