OCTEON Fusion Family Unveiled by Cavium

The OCTEON Fusion Family has been unveiled by Cavium. Specifically designed for LTE (News - Alert) & 3G small cell base stations, the OCTEON Fusion is the most powerful, small cell "Base Station-on-a-chip" family in the industry. An announcement in this regard made by the top provider of semiconductor products for networking, communications and the digital home, Cavium Inc.

OCTEON's widely successful MIPS64 based multi-core architecture is used in OCTEON Fusion processors. This architecture is combined with purpose-built Baseband DSP cores, extensive LTE/3G hardware accelerators and digital front end or DFE functionality on a single chip.

Multiple SoCs or system-on-a-chip comprises this product family. The top scalability in the industry is delivered as the SoCs enable small cells ranging from 32 users to 300+ users and up to dual 20MHz carriers. A comprehensive, interoperability tested, carrier-class L1 to L3 software suite for rapid time to market, FusionStack software also accompanies OCTEON Fusion. Collaboration with a Tier-1 Telecom Equipment Manufacturer or TEM has resulted in the development of OCTEON Fusion and FusionStack Software.

In a release, Will Strauss, Principal Analyst at Forward Concepts (News - Alert), said, "There is no question that carrier-deployed small cells are critical for LTE network expansion. We expect a dozen or so of these carrier-class small cells to accompany each macrocell deployment. Cavium is in a unique position with its breadth of multi-core, DSP and software assets and has the potential to be a major player in this market space."

According to Syed Ali (News - Alert), President and CEO at Cavium, small cell solutions with unprecedented levels of scalability, performance, security and manageability are required by TEMs. Differentiating capabilities like QoS, interference mitigation and Self-Optimizing Networks or SONs should be also offered by these solutions. The top processing power in the industry is provided by the company’s OCTEON Fusion family. Sophisticated macro class capabilities can be therefore implemented with low cost footprint by Wireless TEM's.

Ali said, "Cavium has already built a strong position in the wireless infrastructure market by establishing an excellent foothold in 3G/4G macro BTS/Core Network and the innovative OCTEON Fusion product line will enable us to further expand our market position in one of the highest growth areas of the infrastructure market."
