Bringing Efficient Infrastructure Management to the Enterprise

Why are cloud services so popular? For Wendy Perilli, executive vice president of Global Marketing at Abiquo (News - Alert), the answer lies largely in infrastructure availability.

“Amazon became successful because there was a pain point in the market,” Perilli said during a TMCnet video interview. “Development teams were sick of waiting for IT teams to provision infrastructure for them. Amazon came along and created an option.”

Public clouds like Amazon’s make sense for some application, and for some users. But there still remains some things enterprises can’t put on public clouds. These customers are the focus for Abiquo, an enterprise cloud management company.

Abiquo provides a solution for enterprises and service providers seeking a way to manage information technology infrastructure and enable self service portals for end users who consume resources.

“This is an opportunity for IT to build what’s needed,” Perilli said during the interview. Development teams can come back and consume resources in a way that’s acceptable for compliance and security.”

The concept of being able to access what’s needed, when it’s needed, is sometimes referred to as the consumerization of the enterprise. By enabling internal development of infrastructure, Abiquo lets IT people retain control through application of business policy, while allowing end-users to consume resources through an easy-to-use GUI.

Abiquo has two main branches to its customer base: service providers, and large enterprises. The company is seeing its largest growth in the APAC region, where service providers are seeking more effective ways to leverage data centers as a means of serving dense populations, rather than building large infrastructures.

Version 1.8 of Abiquo’s platform was launched earlier this year (2011). It includes Cisco (News - Alert) UCS integration.
