On the Road with Splash Data

As part of TMCnet.com’s special On the Road series in San Jose, CA, TMC (News - Alert) CEO Rich Tehrani had a chance to sit down with, Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData, provider of productivity applications for smartphones for both consumer and business applications.

The company’s products are being used by millions of users globally on BlackBerry, iPhone, Android (News - Alert), Windows Mobile, Symbian and webOS smartphone platforms.

SplashData’s products include productivity applications for smartphones plus desktop companion software that lets users sync their information between their phone and a PC or Mac. SplashData is most notably known for its SplashID, a password management software solution that provides protection for safe password management.

Their biggest customer, notes Slain, is the enterprise who are purchasing SplashID on a volume basis for their employees.

ID protection is an extremely important element for businesses today. Businesses, small and large, have to deal with workplace information protection and privacy to some extent. Having adequate workplace ID protection controls just makes good business sense.

“We have multiple layers of 256 bit encryption. We’ve never had a case of the passwords being hacked,” said Slain. “The issue comes when people use passwords that people can guess.”

This is why, notes Slain, a solution like SplashID is so important.

“It makes it easier for employees to follow best practices.”

SplashID safely and securely stores all personal identification information including user names, passwords, credit cards, calling cards, bank accounts, PINs, and more. It also has the ability to securely backup and restore your data so you can perform periodic backups so in the event that your phone does get lost, stolen, or damaged, you don’t have to start from scratch and reenter all of your account info.

In regards to the voicemail hacking scam in England surrounding News Corp (News - Alert), Slain says it was an easy hack because it was not the phone itself, but the voicemail pins.

“The way they were able to access the pins was to guess what the people were using,” said Slain. “Those tend to be the last four digits of your phone number or a birthday. That’s where information can get compromised.”

SplashData recently launched SplashID Enterprise which allows an organization to use stronger password management practices without compromising security or increasing costs.

SplashID Enterprise provides a complete password management and security solution for organizations using either Windows or Mac OS platforms for end users. It also offers IT managers powerful control for the centralized administration of password and security policies across various departments and employee groups throughout an enterprise.

“This is the version that is server-based for IT managers,” said Slain.

This version speaks to the requests of its customers, many of which were asking for mobile clients for the enterprise.

“We’re bringing SplashID Enterprise to the iPhone (News - Alert), to Android and to BlackBerry,” said Slain.

SplashID Enterprise decreases potential costs of security threats. By implementing SplashID, organizations can significantly reduce the risk of information stolen via password exposure, including data loss, legal costs, the loss of customers, and the loss of employee productivity.
