Ikanos Announces First Dual-Core Communications Processors for Next Generation Services Gateways

Ikanos (News - Alert) Communications, Inc. , a provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, announced two new dual-core communications processors, the Fusiv Vx175 and Fusiv Vx173.

The new Ikanos chipsets is based on features of the Fusiv family of processors and it can be supported by Ikanos products. The Fusiv Vx175/173 allows service providers to deploy and manufacturers to build a range of devices like femtocell gateways, smart energy gateways, mobile broadband routers, optical networking terminals, network attached storage and other next generation services gateways.

"The traditional residential gateway is morphing into an intelligent services gateway -- a home hub that enables everything from content delivery like IPTV (News - Alert) to home automation and energy management and a whole host of cloud-based services," stated Jonathan Black, director of customer premises marketing for Ikanos.

"Regardless of the broadband access technology -- wireline or wireless -- these service gateways need substantial processing speed, flexible interfaces, quality of service and advanced power management. Ikanos' Fusiv Vx185/183 is optimized for VDSL while the Vx175/173 provides the same benefits for PON, LTE (News - Alert) and other broadband access technologies," Black adds.

The Vx175/173 processors show advancements over the previous Fusiv family and adds more  advanced capabilities, like Advanced Dual-Core Processor (News - Alert) Architecture, with the Vx175/173 communications processors having two MIPS cores. In the Vx175, cores provide up to 600MHz processing power. The Vx173 cores run at 400MHz. With the dual cores, these products can handle femtocell stacks, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and a range of other computational-intensive tasks.

Another capability is the Programmable Hardware .The Vx175/173 also includes programmable hardware accelerator processors to provide flexibility, improved performance and quality of service. There is also Multiple Interfaces for LAN/WAN that includes up to three Gigabit MACs, two PCIe and two USB 2.0 hosts to enable the processor to easily connect via many in-home distribution. Other capabilities include World Class Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) Performance;  Integrated SATA Interface; and Dynamic Power Management.

Ikanos also provides a unified suite of software that includes operating system independent drivers for Ethernet, xDSL and integrated peripherals. This unified software package enables equipment manufacturers to leverage their software resource investment across multiple product lines.
