HDBaseT Alliance Introduces 'Power Over HDBaseT'

The HDBaseT Alliance, an association that promotes and standardizes HDBaseT technology for whole-home distribution of uncompressed high-definition (HD) multimedia content, recently  released the HDBaseT Alliance Power Over HDBaseT (POH) Addendum to the HDBaseT 1.0 specification.

“HDBaseT is the only transport technology that delivers true all-in-one connectivity to whole-home and commercial-grade networks, taking the title as the most advanced power over cable connectivity standard on the market today by enabling the transfer of up to 100 watts of power to consumer devices,” said Micha Risling, marketing chair at HDBaseT Alliance, in a statement.

Leveraging the HDBaseT technology with POH, manufacturers can build thinner and lighter TVs. The new release will enable consumers to have enough flexibility to install these TVs on any wall in their home, without proximity to a power outlet.

The release is a significant development for the industry, as demand for whole-home connectivity is growing. Though innovations are happening, consumers face installation limitations and substantial cost as they search for wall locations that can support and provide power access for their consumer electronics devices.

“By adding power capabilities to HDBaseT, consumers now have the flexibility to tailor their whole-home network to their needs in a cost-effective manner,” Yair Darashan, chair of the HDBaseT POH subcommittee and Microsemi (News - Alert) AMSG chief engineer. “We were pleased to provide our deep industry knowledge and years of experience working with Power Over Ethernet at Microsemi to the development of POH.”

Recently, HDBaseT Alliance announced the release of the HDBaseT 1.0 Certification Program and availability of the first HDBaseT certified product. The certification program includes the availability of the HDBaseT Compliance Test Specification, designated logo guidelines and the opening of the first HDBaseT recognized test facility which is located in Israel.
