BlackDuck Offers Support to SPDX V1Open Source Standard in the Black Duck Suite

Black Duck Software (News - Alert) announced its support for the release of the Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX) Version 1 open source standard in the Black Duck Suite. The company provides products and services and strategy for automating the management, governance and secure use of open source software.

Black Duck Software serves applications in the enterprise scale that are created by a multi-source development process. Black Duck enables companies to reduce time-to-solution and development costs besides facilitating all aspects of open source software development.

In a release Jack Manbeck, manager, Open Source (News - Alert) Review Board, TI Texas Instruments said, “As a Black Duck customer and an active supporter of the SPDX standard, Texas Instruments is pleased that Protex now supports SPDX.”

“Having such tools will help the community propagate the use of SPDX and enhance supply chain efficiency,” Manbeck added.

It was revealed that SPDX is an industry standard for communicating the open source components, licenses and copyrights that are constituents of a software package. SPDX helps in the uniform documentation and sharing of metadata about software packages optimizing it for communications between supply chain partners. This standard strives to enable companies to comply with software licensing stipulations.

Black Duck, serving the open source code and license management industry, is capable of generating SPDX output as part of the reporting capability of the Black Duck Suite. Black Duck also co-chairs the Linux Foundation’s SPDX Working Group that is represented by people taking part in open source projects, vendors, and corporate users.

In related news the SPDX workgroup, hosted by The Linux Foundation (News - Alert) has released version 1.0 of its Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX) standard recently in order to advance Linux and open source software in embedded markets.
